We start at the main car park in Maro and have a short walk along the N-340. We will then turn off and make our way to an old eerie quarry where abandoned machinery/vehicles still remain.
Here the footpaths are quite stony so care needs to be taken.
We will then follow the Barranco de los Colmenarejos up and towards a natural stone arch. Here we will take a path up and out of the barranco (this is a fair climb out) and towards a old cortijo ruin where we will have a lunch stop whilst admiring the views of the Miel Valley. On our route back we will take a path where we can see the quarry from above.

The trail starts at the Plaza España and goes up towards the mirador via a well-defined and maintained path. This part is challenging but well within the capabilities of the group. Once at the top, we’ll follow a good 4×4 track taking in the panoramic views of Guájar Alto, Pico de la Giralda and Sierra Nevada.
We pick up the Las Bizarras trail where we will pass 2 old lime caleras (kilns) and rest up for some refreshments at a nearby cave.
This area is noted for its varied aromatic plants.
Río Bacal – Poza del Romance 3 hours 10.2km Near Jayena
This is a fairly gentle walk along the side of the river near Jayena. It is necessary to cross the river at several points. It starts at the Área Recreativa in Jayena. Drive to Jayena and follow signs to camping area. Not sure if you can drive here. The route follows the course of the river with stunning scenery of the steep gorge and hills on either side. The end point of the walk is the Pozo del Romance where you can bathe when the weather and water are warmer.
